I'm Donna McCook — Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist with thirty years in clinical practice experience behind me in health and injury rehabilitation including with applied back pain rehab, exercise prescription for bone health (osteoporosis / osteopenia) and muscle health (with aging, post cancer and post illness), and managing the physical changes associated with menopause.
I am currently a PhD Candidate researching how the significant weight loss, now readily possible with GLP-1RA medications, impacts muscle health. I'm researching this because I am concerned.Â
Losing muscle during weight loss may feel like an acceptable trade-off for you today; but we may well be trading today's health problems for a far bigger one down the track if we are just passive in the process.Â
For women especially, I query how much muscle loss is really ok. Particularly as we age. I'm not comfortable waiting for that conversation to catch up. So - I am bringing together what I have learnt so far to share with you so you too can make informed decisions about on ways to invest in your future self.Â
